Leather Markings

Natural markings give leather character.
No two hides are alike, and dyes absorb differently within each hide. Since it takes several hides of leather to complete one piece of furniture, there will be variation in leather color and texture. These characteristics are not flaws, they're proof of authenticity.

Leather grain at spine area is tighter

Leather around neck shows wrinkles

Leather at the flanks is pebbly

Healed scratches

Healed scars

Insect bites

FURNITURE CARE

Caring for your upholstery furniture

If your furniture is located near a window, it's best to use window treatments to prevent furniture from discoloring. Heating and air outlets will also fade fabrics and leather, as well as damage the fibers over an extended period of time.

Fabric: never take the cushion cover off to clean.
To clean a spill, immediately blot (without rubbing) with a dry, absorbent white cloth. Check the cleaning code (w/s, w or s) on the label underneath the center seat cushion for suggested cleaning methods for the fabric on this Bassett furniture. Use a professional furniture cleaning service when an overall cleaning is needed.

Leather: clean with a soft, damp white cloth.
After wiping clean, gently rub with a soft dry cloth. Never use polishes, oils, ammonia, cleaning fluids, solvents or detergents to clean leather upholstery. The use of these cleaning agents may cause damage and will void the warranty. For professional cleaning and repair contact: Leather Solutions 1.866.875.7446

Rotate and fluff seat and back cushions regularly. Vacuum regularly with upholstery attachment.
This will prevent the cushion core from wearing prematurely, will preserve the fabric color and control welt slippage. Although dust may not be apparent, it settles into your upholstery and may not only make it dirty, but may eventually damage the fibers if not removed.

Leather Care

Leather is very durable, but basic care is needed to keep it looking its best.

Dust frequently, just like other furniture

Clean often with a soft, white cloth that is lightly dampened with water

Wipe up spills immediately on all leather types

Avoid direct sunlight, it damages leather

Keep away from heating vents and fireplaces that can dry out leather

FURNITURE CARE

Caring for your wood furniture

Don't place near sources of moisture.
Humidifiers and exposure to other types of moisture can damage wood's finish.

Use a damp, 100% cotton cloth for dusting wood surfaces. Dry thoroughly.
Synthetic fibers can cause surface scratches.

Place protective materials under anything that will touch the surface.
Place felt pads under lamps, computer equipment, clocks, etc. Use a protective pad when using a ballpoint pen, coasters under beverage glasses and avoid setting anything hot on your wood furniture.

Use non-plastic mats or pads to protect the tabletop.
Plastic or rubber materials can cause an undesirable reaction with the finish, therefore avoid plastic tablecloths, placemats, and table top accessories.

Leather Definitions

Color

Anline
Leather that has been dyed with a transparent dye which penetrates all the way through the top and back surfaces, allowing all the natural characteristics of the hide to be highlighted.

Semi-aniline
Top-grain leather that is aniline dyed, and has pigment and/or other topical finishes added for enhanced effects or a more even coloration.

Grain

Top Grain, top layer
Splits, bottom two layers

Full Grain

Embossed Grain, more uniform texture

Top Grain
The outermost layer of the leather hide, which produces the highest quality leather.

Full Grain
Top grain leather that has not been altered and retains its original, natural grain.

Grain
The distinctive pore and wrinkle pattern of a hide; may be either natural or embossed.

Splits
Underlying layers of the leather hide, not top grain. Used for suede, and may be embossed to simulate top grain.

Bonded
A reconstituted leather product created by grinding leather scraps and mixing them with bonding agents to create a sheet of material, then embossed with a grain pattern. Often used on leather book covers.

Treatment

Corrected

Uncorrected

Buffed

Corrected
Leather's natural surface texture has been altered to make it more uniform.

Uncorrected
Leather's natural surface texture has not be altered in any way; original grain pattern and markings intact.

Embossed
Texture is added to alter or enhance the surface, resulting in uniform grain or unique patterns.

Buffed
The top surface of the hide is sanded to give the leather a soft, velvety feel.

Top Coat
A clear protective coating to help resist spills and soiling, making it easier to maintain the appearance of the leather.

Enhancements

Sauvage

Pull up effect

Crackle effect

Bonded, leather product

Patina
The desirable change in appearance of leather due to normal use and time, affecting its color, texture and luster.

Sauvage
A two-tone or marbled effect created by applying dyes or pigments to create highs and lows in coloration.

Oil-protected
During the tanning process, oils are infused into the surface to create a soft, pliable feel. As the leather is pulled, the oils separate, creating variation in color.

Pull Up
Leather that shows bursts of color when pulled, often a lighter color. When upholstered, these lighter areas appear where the leather is stretched, such as arms, corners and backs. Creates a naturally aged appearance.

Wax-protected
Leather that has been nished with wax for a smooth feel and burnished luster. Often, the wax will contribute to an aged, crackled look.

Crackle
The nish is applied and milled in such a way that the top layer appears to "crack" revealing the color underneath, and creating an aged look. Often achieved by the use of wax finish.
