Kate looks for the beauty in life and passionately writes about them in her food, fashion and lifestyle blog. She enjoys living in Raleigh with her husband Justin, and three kids. It's exciting to live in a place that is regularly topping the charts of "best places to live."

"I wanted to find the right balance of the room looking classic and well-designed, but still inviting and comfortable to sit in and use."

To create her dream family room Kate went to Bassett's Village District store in Raleigh and met with Bassett design consultant Michael Perry. The result was a "family-friendly family room that felt refined and cozy."

Kate decided on two Carolina sofas, two Pippa chairs, and two Custom Leather Ottomans to create intimacy and room for a big gathering. An Odellia rug pulls the seating together, and a clever mix of Bassett tables (Tahiti, Linville, and Trellis) gives the room a uniquely curated look. Custom accent pillows and some shimmery lighting give the room a designer's touch.

Tell us about the pieces you selected.

We selected a beautiful mix of round and geometric pieces to play off each other! Michael suggested a lot of the fabrics we ended up going with, and I'm so glad I trusted him!

What is your decorating process?

I usually look to inspirational images on Instagram or Pinterest. When I'm ready to work on a space I select the large pieces of furniture first, then fill in around them.

What's the best piece of decorating advice you ever received?

"Don't hang art so high!" My mom, who is a very talented decorator, told me this once.

The NC Art Museum does outdoor movies in the summertime! Beyond that, it’s on a beautiful property with walking paths and sculptures to see and appreciate.

SWEET TREATS

Fresh. Local Ice Cream is the best, creamiest ice cream in the cutest downtown shop. Worth the trip.

OUTDOORS

Pullen Park is fun for all ages. There are small rides for the kids, like a carousel and a train that takes you on a short ride. And open grassy areas to enjoy a picnic and beauty of the park.
