Queen Bed Dimensions

Queen Size Bed Measurements: The Complete Guide

What are the dimensions of a queen-sized bed? Before you begin shopping for a new bed, come armed with numbers.  Don’t make the common mistake of confusing mattress size with bed size or mixing up standard and non-standard queen bed dimensions. While mattresses and frames come in standard sizes, beds aren’t quite so standard. Once you determine which mattress size is right for you, keep an eye on the dimensions of the bed to ensure it’ll fit your space well.

Queen bed frame size

A standard queen-sized bed frame measures approximately 60 inches wide by 80 inches long. In comparison to queen bed dimensions, a twin bed is 38 inches wide by 75 inches long, a full bed is 54 inches wide by 75 inches long, and a king bed is 76 inches wide by 80 inches long.

How wide is a queen bed?

A standard queen size bed is 60 inches wide, which is 6 inches wider than a 54-inch wide full-size bed and 16 inches narrower than a 76-inch king-size bed. If you want some extra queen bed width, an Olympic queen may be a good non-standard option. Olympic queen beds are 66 inches wide, which is 6 inches wider than a standard queen bed and 10 inches shorter than a king bed.

How long is a queen bed?

A standard queen bed is 80 inches long, which is the same length as a king bed and 5-inches longer than a 75-inch full bed. If you want non-standard queen with extra legroom, a California queen may be an attractive option. A California queen bed is 84 inches long, which is 4 inches longer than a standard queen and the same length as a California king.

What size is a queen mattress?

Queen mattress dimensions for standard queen beds are 80 inches long and 60 inches wide, or the same as queen bed frame dimensions. It is a common misconception to think that queen bed frame sizes and queen mattress dimensions are different, as the measurements for standard and non-standard queen bed frames and mattresses are the same.

Queen mattress depth

Queen-sized mattresses can measure anywhere from 8 to 18 inches, as there is no standard queen mattress depth. Generally, mattress depth is a matter of preference, with adults sleeping on a mattress with at least 10 inches of thickness.

*Bonus: Other Helpful Queen Bed Measurements

There are other dimensions besides the typical queen bed measurements like length, width,  and depth that can be more confusing. Below are some other helpful dimensions to keep in mind when shopping for a queen-size bed.

Size of a queen headboard

While there is no standard queen headboard dimension, headboards are most often 20-52 inches tall and 0-3 inches wider than the frame. Queen headboards have an average height of 48 inches with a width of 60-63 inches for standard and California queen beds and 66-69 inches for Olympic queen beds.

Standard bed frame height

There is no standard queen bed frame height, the distance from the ground to the mattress can range from 18 to 36+ inches. Generally, mattresses are an average of 24 inches from the ground on queen beds. Bed frame heights that are 30-36 inches off the ground are most often found on antique beds.

Queen sheet sizes

Flat queen sheets measure 90 x 102 inches. Fitted sheets are generally the same size as the bed frame and mattress, meaning fitted sheets are 80 x 60 inches for standard queen beds, 84 x 60 inches for California queens, and 80 x 66 inches for Olympic queen beds.
