The Newbury Collection: Softly Modern, Warmly Classic, Organically Curvaceous

Softly Modern, Warmly Classic, Organically Curvaceous

White oak, grasscloth, pencil rattan…and just a bit of non-conformist inspiration! With this Newbury Collection, Anne Spilman-Souter’s designer perspective focuses on a sculptural statement that delivers a reimagined application of modern geometry with edges softened by organic materials and textures.

This 35-piece collection is a signature introduction from Bassett’s Creative Director, and one that reflects a breadth of cultural references as well as Spilman-Souter’s aesthetic. While steeped in tradition both stylistic and familial, her aim with the Newbury Collection is to embrace the very modern mode of individuality in our personal spaces.

“Newbury represents our vision of traditional design reimagined: fresh, relevant, versatile and meticulously detailed. We wanted to achieve a feeling of warmth in a comprehensive collection that could easily be personalized, with individual, sculptural pieces that could live within the collection or be used on their own.”

Being rooted in tradition provides the grounded design philosophy that then encourages you to branch out and seek your own piece of the sky…your own claim on style. That’s why there’s no lack of curvaceous fun and creative whimsy to be found in the Newbury Collection.

Newbury Living

From Unique Groupings to That One Fabulous Piece

With Newbury, you can select from many varied pieces to assemble a unique grouping, all while knowing that there’s a through-thread to maintain your style message. Or you can choose to uncover the one special piece that, when added to your current décor, will uplift the artistry of your already distinctive, quite individual viewpoint.

Spilman-Souter elaborated, “We thought a lot about how the pieces could or would be used in different rooms…including the kind of common spaces that call for one fabulous piece.”

Newbury Dining

In an article for Home News Now, Editor Cindy Hodnett calls out some of Newbury’s many stand-out pieces…”a sculptural console reminiscent of stacked Jenga blocks, a credenza, cocktail table and console with reeding details, [and] rounded cabinets with glass fronts.”

Your options build from there. White oak casegoods show off arching and coved curves along with that signature reeding. The iconic geometry of round cocktail and end tables comes dressed in Newbury’s signature gesso finish and sports split rattan highlights. One of this season’s irresistible accent colors (blue!) appears on the collection’s 5-drawer chest in another one of those “go-everywhere-live-anywhere” scenarios. And, all the Newbury Collection knobs are custom-designed, polished nickel beehives.

It’s abundantly clear that the Newbury Collection is built on the time-honored classic design principles of visually engaging contrast, dynamic interplay of structure and softness, and an expressive use of mixed materials and motifs.
