Dining Room Setting for the Holidays

Written by: Cynthia Ruff

It's the holiday season, which means you may find yourself hosting more friends and family for dinner to celebrate this wonderful time of year. To make the most of catching up with those you love, it is essential to prepare your dining room before all your guests arrive. Here are three charming ways to get your dining room ready for holiday dinners.

Start with the Right Setup

Setting the mood starts with the right setup, meaning you need to have ample seating and table space for your guests. If you like to entertain guests frequently, you’ll love how sharp the BenchMade Conroy Table looks when decked out for your family. The smooth maple surface looks elegant regardless if your style is casual or more formal.

Next, you’ll want to have the right seating. Upholstered chairs make for enjoyable seating during extended dinners. The Samson chair has a variety of fabrics you can choose from depending on your personal style. Guests will surely comment about how comfortable the seating is for your next dinner party.

Having a great base helps make the rest of the dining room fall into place easily.

Holiday Table Decorations

Create a great centerpiece using seasonal fruits and fresh greenery

Making a great centerpiece doesn’t have to be expensive. By using some spare branches from Christmas tree lots and layering them with your own dehydrated oranges, you can create a great centerpiece from seasonal fruits and fresh greenery. This fresh centerpiece will smell as good as an expensive floral display and look elegant for all the guests you plan on having over for the Holidays.

A seasonal greenery centerpiece is also low enough so that you can pass dishes across the table if you plan on serving a family-style meal and encourages cross-table chit-chat. For added contrast to a dark dining table, layer your greenery on top of an off-white table runner to really make your centerpiece pop.

Our dining room table is richly colored and elegant, so we wanted to honor those aesthetics with this greenery runner. The pop of white under the greenery helps break up too many deep colors and accentuates the cream in the upholstered chairs. The earthy tones in the fabric definitely help play up the etherial-ness of the table design itself.

Add some shimmery metallics to your table for a festive pop

From candleholders to silverware, and serve ware, a mix of shimmery metallics helps your table pop with festivity. Opt for candle holders in glittery golds or antiqued silvers and mix and match both to really make your table shine.

Pull out Grandma’s antique silver-plate silverware or mom’s gilded gold silverware. If you don’t have enough for the full seating, you can always alternate every other seat to have a different set of silverware (great for the formal dinner when people can’t remember which fork is theirs).

Use some leftover tinsel to dress up your seasonal greenery centerpiece or hang some from the light fixture overhead. Little touches of glimmer help immerse your guests in the magic of the Holiday season.

Play Up Festive Color in a Unique Way

Whether your festive colors are traditional reds and greens or more modern like oranges and deep plums, by incorporating these around your table decor, you can really add a unique wow factor to your table.

You can use your festive color palette as an accent ribbon on your centerpiece or the ribbon tied around a napkin subbed for a napkin ring.

The festive color seen here is orange and it was used in the orange slices, the glassware, and the napkins.

Having it in three different places on your table helps the accent go from one-off to a focal point.

It’s easy to add a little charm to your holiday table while hosting friends and family this time of year. The best thing is, you can keep it as low fuss as you want while still making it fun and festive. At the end of the day, the most important thing is having fun while hosting this Holiday season.
